Tofu takes on tailgating, and it’s less full of manure

Tailgating—nothing beats sizzling, fat sausages and well-seasoned burgers on charcoal grill washed down with enough beer to kill a horse. According to statistics compiled by Nationwide Insurance, an estimated 50 million Americans tailgate, with as many as 40% of those spending over $500 a season on food and other supplies. However there are many externalities … Continue reading »

What’s so bad about shampoo sulfates?

By Jeanne Alexander “Sulfate-free” is a common quip on the shampoo shelves. But what are sulfates, and what do they do to our water system and hair? Is it worth making the expensive switch? In Photos: Columbia’s Recycling Facility

At some point or another, most of us have heard at least something about Columbia’s landfill and recovery operations, where all of MU and Columbia’s waste and recycling is sent. Last week, I had the pleasure of touring the landfill via an Environmental Leadership Office-sponsored event, to finally see (and smell) what all the buzz … Continue reading »

9 ways the Student Center gets green design right

Guess what! Despite its flashy appearance, the MU Student Center has a pretty light footprint, especially for a building that handles more than 30,000 students, professors and employees. Not only have they hosted numerous Earth Day events, helped with Sustain Mizzou’s E-Waste Drive and made sure to include vegetarian options in their numerous food events, the building itself features an impressive amount of eco-friendlier elements. Here are nine ways Missouri Student Unions got it right. Continue reading »

To see more of Han’s work, please visit http://www.hancheung.com. Tracing … Continue reading »

From dustbin to Mexico: a True/False sustainability story

By Echo Zhang The day after the legendary True/False film festival, I stood in front of the recycle bin and found my treasure: cardboard boxes for shipping the documentary files to another festival in Mexico. It was my big mission volunteering as Errand Runner that day to help T/F shipping go green!  The idea came … Continue reading »

The doughnut of justice: A new way to think about growth

Reblogged from Grist: Of all the subjects that haunt the climate conversation, none is so vexed as growth. The details are complex, but the dilemma is simple: Growth seems to improve humanity’s quality of life and drive ecological overshoot at the same time. On one hand, economic growth leads to poverty reduction, better health, technological … Continue reading »
