In anticipation of the Academy Awards, the Environmental Reading and Media Group watched the 40-minute documentary “The Warriors of Qiugang.” This Oscar-nominated film was co-produced by Yale Environment 360 with filmmakers Ruby Yang and Thomas Lennon, who have made a trilogy of short films set in China — the first of which, “The Blood of Yingzhou District,” won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
Because U.S. environmentalists can get so focused their own causes (mountaintop removal, dams and the oil spill, for instance), it’s sometimes easy to forget that others across the global are fighting for the same kind of environmental justice. This film brings one village’s story into relief and prompts us to reflect on activism worldwide.
Another environmentally-related film nominated for “Best Documentary Short Subject” is Sun Come Up. If you’ve seen it, let us know how it is. It could be an upcoming film for ERM!
The Reading and Media Group will meet on Thursdays at 6 p.m. in the Student Center. February 17th’s meeting will be in MSU S302. New readers are always welcome.
